Martin Luther King Day March & Rally, NC gerrymandering – 1/11/2022

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY MARCH & RALLY IN BREVARD

Our community will commemorate and rededicate ourselves to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 17th, with a march from Bethel “A” Baptist Church at 290 Oakdale St. to the Courthouse on Main.  Following the march, we will hear remarks from speakers including Transylvania NAACP President Tommy Kilgore and Bethel “A”‘s recently installed Reverend Dr. Pamela C. Holder.  The march will begin promptly at 5:30, and participants are invited to bring flashlights and/or phones for illumination during the program.  As a precaution against Covid, we encourage participants to wear masks and maintain social distancing.

PANEL SET TO RULE THIS WEEK ON NC REDISTRICTING SUIT

Arguments were heard this past week on a consolidated suit filed by a variety of plaintiffs—Transylvania NAACP’s Kathleen Barnes among them—against the Republican-dominated state legislature’s redistricting plans passed last November.  If implemented, the plans would likely not only solidify, but actually exacerbate the disproportionality of partisan representation in the state legislature and in the newly expanded US House delegation.  Among the most serious revelations to emerge from the hearing was that a key Republican legislator had used “concept” maps drawn by a third party, a fact he had previously denied.

To read an up-to-date summary of the hearings from Carolina Public Press, an independent nonprofit news organization, click HERE.

The NC Supreme Court, which created the panel that heard the case, has required it to rule by Tuesday, with two days after that in which either party may file an appeal to be taken up directly by the Supreme Court.

We’ve had a good year.  We’ve had our ups and downs and we’ve been involved in a large number of events—we’ve had so much going on this year.  I want to give my heartfelt thanks, not just to the Executive Board, but to every member of our branch.  I want to send a holiday cheer out to everyone, and to thank each and every one of you for the hard work that you have done, as volunteers.  Thank you to each and every one of you. Have blessed and happy holidays, and for those of you who have to travel, be safe.  And please, be energized, so that when we come back on January 1st, we will hit the ground running again, as we always have.
