Maureen Copelof elected Mayor of Brevard & Kwanzaa Proclamation

Congratulations to our very own Maureen Copelof who has been elected as Brevard’s first new mayor in more than twenty years.

Maureen has been a member of the Transylvania NAACP since it was founded in early 2014.

On Monday December 6th Maureen Copelof will be sworn in as Brevard Mayor. As one of Copelof’s first acts as mayor, the Kwanzaa Proclamation will be presented. All NAACP members are encouraged to attend.

The Kwanzaa proclamation originated with Crystal Cauley, founder of the WNC Kwanzaa Collective. “The mission of this project is to have Western North Carolina observe Kwanzaa with proclamations from city and town mayors, art and educational exhibits and events throughout the month of December. The importance of proclaiming Dec. 26 to Jan 1 as Kwanzaa Week will recognize the importance of community, culture and family.”

The City Council Organization Meeting will be held at City Hall on December 6th at 5:30 pm, where new members of council will also be sworn in. The meeting should last no more than 1 hour.
