This Scholarship Fund was established in 2020 in memory of Agnes Lynch Wilson & Carle Wilson Jr., distinguished and beloved members of the Brevard community. Carle Wilson was a scholar, an actor, and an accomplished musician who valued quality education and cherished the place of music and the arts in the life of the people. He and Agnes were both active in the Brevard Little Theater in the 1960s and 1970s and were the first to bring live theater to Brevard’s Black community with a production of A Raisin in the Sun at the Mary C. Jenkins Community Center in the early 1970s. Raisin was so well received that it was followed by other productions, such as Fiddler on the Roof and Little Foxes.
Carle’s love of theater didn’t stop there. He proudly hosted movie nights at Silvermont, featuring classic movies, mostly silent and in black and white.
Carle also loved music, especially classical and jazz. He sang with the Transylvania County Choral Society, Brevard Chamber Singers, and the Reynolds-Miller Choral Society in Asheville. His longest tenure was in the choir at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Brevard, where he contributed his rich baritone for over 40 years and served as Choir Director for over 11 years.
Wilson was an avid reader and lifelong student. He enjoyed being a substitute teacher and participating in the Transylvania County Schools’ Science Fair as a judge. He was a veteran, having served in the US Air Force, and didn’t shy away from civic duties. He enjoyed being actively involved in local elections as a precinct judge and also served on the Western Carolina University Board of Trustees.
Agnes Lynch Wilson was a Transylvania County native, born and raised in Brevard. Alongside her husband, she supported and was actively involved in the Brevard Little Theatre, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church Choir and also participated in area community choirs. She was an active member of her home church, Bethel Baptist Church, where she played piano and organized their Christian education program for a period of time. Agnes’s entire career was spent in education as a Transylvania County Schools employee until her retirement.
